Music
“Music is the universal language of humankind.”
— Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
We take to heart the wisdom of scripture to “teach and form one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in our hearts” (Col. 3:16). We believe in the power of music to express our hopes and longings, troubles and beauty. We know that music connects us to one another and to God, and we rejoice in that connection.
“Music brings us closer to our grace-full, loving, justice-seeking God;
it moves us with the message and mission of Jesus Christ …
surprises us with the Holy Spirit …
takes us to a spiritual place where words alone cannot,
helping us to address God with heart as well as mind, expressing
joy and lament, struggle and hope.”
— Scott Ressman, “Sing! Prayer and Praise”
Mission
Our music ministry offers a wide welcome to our community. If you find nourishment for your spirit more in organ and piano and choir than in the words of a worship service — you are in good company! We include instrumental and choral pieces from a range of time periods, and we look for opportunities to incorporate other musical expressions into our worship services.

Music at Salisbury UCC includes:
- choral and instrumental offerings as a core part of worship, memorial services, and other special events;
- a rich choir experience that fosters faith, fellowship, and caring for one another, encouraging members and guests alike to join the choir;
- a vibrant handbell choir that provides music for worship and the community as well as a caring fellowship within the ensemble;
- nurturing and encouraging the musical talents of young people;
- collaboration with other churches and organizations in musical events as offerings of hospitality, understanding, and outreach to our surrounding communities.
“Music is … a higher revelation than all Wisdom & Philosophy”

“Everything in the universe has a rhythm; everything dances.”
― Maya Angelou
Music Ministry Programs
The Choir
Our repertoire includes a broad range of music from Renaissance, Baroque, Classic, Romantic, Impressionistic, twentieth, and twenty-first century eras. The choir sings for worship services, September to June, and participates in special services, concerts and outreach events during the year. The choir is open to singers of high school age and up. Rehearsals are typically held on Thursdays, 5:30-7pm, and Sundays before worship.
Handbell Choir
An intergenerational Handbell choir is open to ringers from high school age and up, and from beginner to seasoned. This ensemble participates in special services during the year. Rehearsals are usually on Tuesdays at 5:15pm.
Summer Music
During the summer, a Summer Choir is offered once a month for interested singers. The choir rehearses on Sunday, 9:15–9:45am, then sings for the 10:00am service. Special music for the summer services is also provided by musicians from the congregation and area.
Special Music and Guests Musicians
Vocal and instrumental soloists and ensembles enhance worship services at the Salisbury Congregational Church. Northwest Connecticut choirs, ensembles, and soloists are invited to enhance worship services.

The Salisbury Housing Committee creates affordable rental housing; the Salisbury Housing Trust develops affordable housing for ownership. These two groups of volunteers lead our community in advocating on behalf of neighbors who would otherwise be unable to reside in Salisbury because of our skewed housing prices.
